Fear of Failure

Dear Ann Mahony,

I have a very good job and have been working for the same person for about nine years. I am bored with it but am afraid to try something else as the salary is good and am afraid I couldn't make it anywhere else and even with the good salary it seems like there is always something that keeps me from getting ahead. My mother who actually runs the home also lives with me. She is a very remarkable lady age 79. I am overweight and getting worse all the time. I can't seem to get enough incentive to do anything about it. I am disgusted with myself and get myself into situations difficult to get out of.
P. D., Agoura, CA

Dear P. D.

As bleak as things appear to you, I'm quite encouraged by your handwriting. Why? I see no signs of depression, anger, jealousy, childhood trauma, or lack of natural ability or learned skills. Nothing major is blocking your path to success. Nothing that will take years to undo. Your writing indicates a simple fear of failure, combined with low physical energy. Remember the body and emotions are intertwined. When jazzed emotionally, we can force our tired body to run that extra mile. When downcast emotionally, all the vitamins in the world can't help us crawl out of bed. First, we need to work on your physical endurance, which can then support a more buoyant emotional outlook. I'm not a doctor, nor am I making a medical diagnosis, but I'm convinced (from your writing) that a complete check up and some super doses of B vitamins will help immensely, combined with more protein and less carbohydrates in the diet, which tend to drag you down. (I'm looking at the pressure patterns, as well as contraction and release in your writing.)

Several incomplete "s" formations reinforce dropping the ball midway in an endeavor. Weak and low "t" crossings belie a lack of faith and confidence in your ability to achieve. Narrow letter e's resemble the closed eye of a needle, indicating narrow mindedness. You cling to the known, familiar, safe and tried-and-true of past experience, which limits your opportunities for growth and change. Your fine exploratory mind is unable to formulate a remedy, because you can't see the forest for the trees. Your writing is a fine example of an intelligent, creative personality shackled by the sweet smell of security.

Now you've decided to ask for advice, and I'm thrilled! Get ready for some big changes. You have a wonderfully investigative, exploratory mind exemplified by the many points and wedges of your m's, n's, and r's. Line spacing indicates a knack for efficiency and adaptability in organizing your time and energy. Singular lower loop formations indicate a desire for privacy and time alone. No problem. This also indicates that you can grasp the initiative and tackle new changes with entrepreneurial spirit.
.
Open up those letter e's. An open mind stimulates creativity, and spurs you on to explore new avenues for achievement and successful solutions. Accept each new idea which comes your way - whether the source be a book, personal contact, experience, or just daily happening. Before you reject an idea out of hand, let your mind turn it over, walk around it, play with it, and ask what if?

Personal relationships will improve as you adopt a receptive attitude toward suggestions of associates. Persons you have overlooked in the past may now considering acquiring the newly responsive, inquisitive person as a member of their team. When you allow yourself true freedom of choice, job possibilities expand exponentially. Soon "I'm afraids" are replaced with "How can I apply this to me?" You've got the mental agility and talent for success; all that's missing is the faith in yourself. There is nothing you need to fix, improve, correct or make better. Everything you need to propel you forward is already in place. Open your mind and your heart - trust that your good gut instincts will support you and move you forward. It's all there waiting for you in the change of a heartbeat.
